  The Other Pilgrimmage
(Category: life, faith and a hint of Role-Playing Games)

Well, having returned from Continuum, and never properly written it up, it's time to prepare for the other pilgrimmage - the trip to Greenbelt.

Once again I am the be found with my head in the understairs cupboard, muttering incoherently about the evils of disposable plastic bags and the way the roost in dark places, totally obscuring useful, but only annually used camping equipment.

Once again the trip into the loft for the rucksack and sleeping bag.

Not forgetting the recent traditition of tinned curry (especially handy when camping solo as there is no-one else in the tent to offend!)

The annual, "how much can you get in a racksack?" competition has yet to start, because I can't find the single air-bed, a piece of kit which, in my youthful exuberance I would have decried as un-necessary and now in my late-thirties experience I can heartily recommend! At least I still camp, unlike some friends I will not publicly mention who resort to the University Halls of residence (you know who you are, LMP's Godparents - only kidding!)

Still GB, like RPG Cons, is one of those wonderful instant communities, full of friendly new people and those old hands you only ever see once a year and whose names you always forget, not to mention those old friends you only see there now. The only area of difference I've really been able to spot between GB and RPG cons lies in the acommodation, with plenty of fellow gamers ready to complain about the quality of university halls, while for GB you have to bring your own. (Although that does raise an intruiging possibility for a cheap Con - find a large non-residential pub/function room adjacent to a large field. Add portaloos and viola "CanvasCon, you bring the bed, we'll provide the board!")

But, as ever, I digress.

Tomorrow I will join the exodus to Cheltenham once again and create part of that living tented city, partly earthly and partly heavenly. We will join in the lived experience of the "Redemption Songs" - and no doubt the lengthy traffic queues. Possibly, in the very best way, an immersive Live Action Role Play, with the roles we play simply being ourselves.

And if you get there before I do mine's a Green Tea at the Tiny Tea Tent, unless the Organic Ale Tent's there again, in which case I'll have another pint of Hobgoblin, thanks for asking!

See you there!

To some he's the vicar, Reverend Stuart, on a mission to help people discover the open secret of eternal life. To others he is a writer, thinker, punster and drinking partner. He is Dr Moose - and these are some of his thoughts.
